The European agency of the World Health Organization advises against closing schools, even as the corona figures rise in many countries. “Schools should be the last places to close” when corona restrictions are imposed, the statement said. Forty-five countries and territories recommend keeping schools open with measures to prevent and control infections. In seven countries, schools are partially or completely closed, two countries opt for distance learning. “Last year’s widespread school closures, which disrupted the education of millions of children and adolescents, have done more harm than good,” said WHO director Hans Kluge. “We cannot make the same mistake again.” Instead of closing schools, the WHO recommends a wide range of measures, including keeping distance, washing hands, wearing a mouth mask, testing and adequately ventilating classrooms.
